Business & Finance HOMEWORK

Anthony Gomez

Our readings this week highlight the value of being self-taught and the importance of experimenting. These approaches help people understand and master various skills more deeply. I have personally experienced the benefits of self-teaching and learning by doing, especially in business the world. I have always been interested in business communication and its impact on success. While formal education gave me a solid foundation, much of my expertise came from hands-on experience and self-directed learning. For example, I taught myself digital marketing through online courses, tutorials, and by experimenting with different strategies in real-world scenarios. This practical approach helped me understand what works and what doesn’t. It also allowed me to develop effective communication campaigns for my business.

Experimenting and problem-solving are important for several reasons. First, they let individuals apply theoretical knowledge to real-life situations, leading to a deeper and more practical understanding of the subject. In my case, experimenting with different marketing techniques helped me identify the best ways to engage with my target audience. Second, these skills encourage creativity and innovation. By trying new ideas and approaches, individuals can discover novel solutions to problems. For example, while managing a project, I experimented with various project management tools and techniques. This led to a more efficient workflow and increased productivity. These skills are useful in various fields and professions. In science, experimentation is essential for discovery and advancement. In the arts, experimenting leads to unique and groundbreaking creations. In business, it drives innovation and competitiveness. Entrepreneurs, for instance, often experiment with different business models and strategies to find the most successful approach. As highlighted by Kaufman and Gregoire (2015) in “Wired to Create,” embracing creativity and experimentation is key to success in many fields.

Problem-solving is also crucial in any profession, as it involves critical thinking and navigating challenges effectively. Whether it’s a doctor diagnosing a patient, an engineer designing a solution, or a teacher developing a new curriculum, these skills are indispensable. Research shows that engaging in active learning and problem-solving can significantly enhance professional capabilities and success (Dweck, 2006). In conclusion, being self-taught and experimenting are invaluable. These skills foster deeper understanding, encourage creativity, and are essential for success in various fields. My experiences in business communication have shown that self-directed learning and practical experimentation are key to mastering any skill and achieving professional success.

Week 2

1. In chapter 3 we learned about the importance of being self taught and the benefits of experimenting. I am self taught in cooking, when I was growing up, my mom made plenty of good meals but I liked bbq the best and she usually would burn it or over cook it at the least. So in abut tenth grade, I got a smoker as a birthday present and started learning how to cook. After going through lots of failed attempts and strange experiments, I began to get the hang of it. I really enjoyed the challenge of it and it sparked a passion for cooking and making people happy. I enjoy when my guests take a bite of food and their eyes light up. It has become such a regular thing at my house that I cook for friends and family probably close to 2 or 3 times a week.

2. “It all raises the question: Just what magical training mechanism was deployed to transform the orphan foundlings of the Venetian sex industry, who but for the grace of charity would have died in the city’s canals, into the world’s original international rock star?” (Epstein, 2019 p. 61). These magical training mechanisms are experimenting and problem solving. They are both very beneficial skills to have and they can help you out in many different ways throughout your entire life. For example, having these key skills could help you get out of very bad situations like having to problem solve and talk down an attacker or even experiment and find out how hard you have to hit them in self-defense to prevent being further attacked. Another example of experimenting would be practicing cooking a certain recipe but keep adding a little bit different spices each time. This could help you develop your perfect recipe and cook it for your friends and family and watch them light up with joy when they eat it.
