General Psychology

Researchers try to use a sample of the population that is truly representative of the people in whom they are interested—one of the main reasons for using random selection. Even so, the sample is usually selected from within a particular segment of the social world in which the researchers themselves live and work.

For example, in the United States there are some fairly distinct differences between people from the Northeast and people from the Southeast, and the same can be true in many other countries. There are also differences between large city populations and populations living in the countryside.

If a psychologist is conducting a study in a particular geographical area of a country, how might regional differences impact the study’s results? What measures could or should the psychologist take to minimize the impact?

The second half of your Discussion Board assignment will be your response to another PSY 1010 classmate in Unit I. Be sure to include the name of the person or question to which you are replying in the subject line. For example, “Tom’s response to Susan’s comment.”

Justin:

My name is Justin  I live in North Platte, Nebarska, a relatively small town in west central Nebraska.  I am currently a career Firefighter/EMT with the North Platte Fire Department and have been for the past 13 years.  This course is the next step in attaining my Bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration as I work towards promotion within my organization.  I will also be starting paramedic school next year just to add to the excitement.  I am a husband and father of 3 and just recently learned my wife is expecting our 4th as well.

Even within smaller geographical areas there are cultural and regional differences that may vary from one town to another.  We see this often where smaller rural communities that are within a few miles of each other have wildly different belief systems or thought patterns.  These belief systems differences may be even more pronounced when larger metropolitan areas grow to overtake smaller communities.  I believe proper sample size from each area while including more research into how the region you are working in is set up will help.  It is hard to get some people to open up but when we want to share the correct information it is very important to include as many views as possible that properly portray that area.
